Self-purification and Ehsan stand as central themes in the spiritual and moral teachings of Islam. Deeply rooted in the Quran and Sunnah, they represent the journey of refining one's inner self and attaining a state of excellence in worship and conduct. This editorial explains the meaning and significance of self-purification and Ehsan, explores their foundations in Islamic scripture, and discusses how their application leads to personal growth and a healthier, more ethical society. In an age of materialism, inner conflicts, and rising social tensions, these timeless Islamic values remain more relevant than ever.

Self-Purification and Ehsan: A Path to Spiritual and Social Excellence

Self-purification in Islam, often referred to as Tazkiyah al-Nafs, is the process of cleansing the soul from sins, arrogance, hypocrisy, and all inner impurities that distance a person from Allah. It involves striving for spiritual purity, sincerity, and moral excellence. The Quran repeatedly emphasises this inner purification as essential for success in this life and the hereafter.

Allah says in the Quran:

He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who corrupts it (Surah Ash-Shams, 91:9-10).

This verse clearly indicates that true success lies not in material gains or social status, but in the purification of the soul. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasized purification as the foundation of a believer’s character. In his numerous teachings, he encouraged Muslims to maintain purity not only externally through cleanliness but also internally by avoiding envy, hatred, pride, and deceit. Hence, self-purification is not a passive state. It requires active self-reflection, repentance, and a continuous effort to align one’s intentions and actions with the teachings of Islam. It involves guarding the heart from spiritual diseases and disciplining the body and soul through acts of worship, dhikr (remembrance), prayer, fasting, and charity.

Defining Ehsan in Light of the Quran and Sunnah

Ehsan is one of the most profound concepts in Islam. Linguistically, it means doing something with excellence, beauty, and perfection. Spiritually, Ehsan refers to worshipping Allah as though one sees Him, and if that is not possible, then to remember that Allah sees them.

This concept was beautifully explained by the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the famous Hadith of Jibril:

Ehsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then know that He sees you. (Sahih Muslim)

Ehsan takes a believer beyond the basic requirements of Islam. It introduces sincerity, humility, and God-consciousness into every act of worship and daily interaction. It motivates a person to go beyond minimum duties and embrace the highest standard of ethical and spiritual behaviour.

In the Quran, Allah commands, "Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good (muhsineen)" (Surah An-Nahl, 16:128). Thus, Ehsan is not limited to acts of worship but extends to every aspect of life, including how we treat others, fulfill our responsibilities, and strive for justice and kindness.

Individual Impact of Self-Purification and Ehsan

On the individual level, self-purification and Ehsan serve as transformative forces. They create a deep sense of self-awareness and responsibility toward Allah. A person who practices these values becomes more honest, humble, disciplined, and spiritually grounded.

1. Inner Peace and Contentment:
Purifying the heart from hatred, jealousy, and greed brings emotional balance and mental peace. It liberates individuals from destructive thoughts and negative energy.

2. Sincerity in Worship:
A person who lives with the consciousness of Ehsan does not perform acts of worship out of formality but with love and devotion. This sincerity enhances the quality of prayers, charity, and every other Islamic obligation.

3. Strengthened Moral Compass:
Self-purification instills a strong moral foundation. It prevents a person from engaging in deceit, arrogance, or oppression, and instead promotes truthfulness, modesty, and empathy.

4. Resistance to Temptation:
The process of Tazkiyah makes individuals aware of their weaknesses and helps them overcome their desires and impulses. It empowers them to choose righteousness even when no one is watching.

Collective Impact on Society

When self-purification and Ehsan become common values in a community, the collective benefits are immense. These values foster a society that is ethical, harmonious, and spiritually elevated.

1. Social Trust and Cooperation:
A society made up of sincere and honest individuals becomes more trustworthy and cooperative. People feel safer, and corruption, fraud, and dishonesty are minimized.

2. Justice and Compassion:
Ehsan inspires people to go beyond justice and act with compassion and generosity. This can be seen in the way communities support the poor, protect the weak, and resolve disputes with kindness.

3. Stronger Institutions:
Whether it’s in governance, education, or business, the influence of Ehsan leads to integrity and fairness. Leaders and workers driven by accountability to Allah are less likely to exploit their positions.

4. Moral Role Models:
When individuals embody Ehsan, they become role models for others. This moral leadership spreads goodness and creates a ripple effect of positive behavior in society.

A Lifelong Journey Toward Excellence

Self-purification and Ehsan are not one-time achievements but lifelong journeys. They represent the essence of what it means to be a devout and responsible Muslim. While laws and rituals are essential in Islam, it is the spirit of these practices that gives them meaning and value. The Quran and Sunnah guide Muslims not only to follow rules but also to transform their hearts and elevate their character.

In today's world, filled with moral confusion, spiritual emptiness, and social fragmentation, the teachings of self-purification and Ehsan offer a timeless remedy. They bring clarity, purpose, and unity, both to individuals and to societies at large. To strive for a purified soul and to live with excellence is to walk in the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and embody the light of Islam in its fullest beauty.
